Given by the Virginia Turfgrass Council at their 1998 conference. This award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of the Virginia Turfgrass Industry. Formally the "Silver Tray Award". (R.D. "Dick" Cake was an early leader in the turfgrass industry in Virginia. He was keenly interested in improving turf quality. He was a charter member of the VA. Turfgrass Council and was elected the first secretary / treasurer of the council, a position he retained until his death. He was also Secretary of the Tidewater Turfgrass Association, Virginia's oldest turfgrass association. In these leadership roles he invested much of his time and effort to the development of the VA. Turfgrass Council and richly deserves the honor of having the Council's first award named after him.)
"Harmon Turf has provided Drill and Fill services to my client, the Carolina Panthers at Ericcson Stadium in Charlotte, NC, for the past 3 years.
The root development that I have seen with my own eyes this spring of 2000, on the Bermuda 419 which was installed at Ericcson Stadium by our firm in May of 1998 is the best that I have seen during my 46 years experience in the construction of Natural Turf Sports Fields.
I have been so impressed with the Drill and Fill that I have retained Harmon Turf to provide the same services on Bobby Dodd Stadium at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA."
"We contacted Harmon Turf Services to perform slit drainage on our 5th fairway with their Blec machine this summer. In the past, we would be forced to keep carts on the path for a good 4 to 5 days after an inch of rain. Obviously, the Bermuda suffered from the perpetual saturated conditions too. Well, in about eight hours they slit drained over 24,000 square feet, which helped rectify an 80 year old problem for our course. Furthermore, the disturbance to the turf canopy was minimal, so there was minimal disruption to play. Needless to say, the quality of the turf, playability, and lack of cart restrictions has dramatically increased."
"As usual, Harmon performed this task very efficiently with a high degree of quality. Joe and all of his staff seem to take pride in their work, which really shows in the finished product. I would definitely recommend Harmon Turf Services and the slit drainage process to anybody in the turf industry."
"I utilized the services of Harmon Turf Services in 2003 to aid me in taking on one of the biggest and the most successful projects of my career. Starting June 2, Joe and his crew began blecovating and installing slit trench drainage onto all 19 greens at the Towson Golf & Country Club. His portion of the project was completed in less than two weeks, in adverse weather conditions. (rain, rain, rain). The greens were then methyl bromide gassed, then floated rolled and compacted. Finally washed A-1 bentgrass sod was installed. The greens were reopened on August 26, an amazing 12 weeks from start of total reconstruction to back into service. The greens now perk over 4 to 5 inched per hour, and the unique design allows us to retain ample moisture and fertility. I truly believe the happy medium between USGA greens and the old push-ups are now in evidence at my facility. They are performing beautifully, with stimpmeter readings over ten and heights of cut less than 1/10"."
"The slit trench drainage remains the focal point of the projects success. This technology made it possible, plausible, and affordable. Our rebuild method ran roughly 25% of a typical rebuild. We were so pleased with the drainage results that we have since had Harmon Turf Services return to fix other problem drainage areas in fairways and roughs because of the success associated with this method of drainage, as well as the cost effectiveness. It is highly likely that their services could be the best solution to your drainage problem."
Joe and Anne,
Just wanted to drop you a note to thank you for all the aerification and seeding you have done for us at Farmington Country Club. You have always gone out of your way to make sure things work out for us, and it is very much appreciated.
Rob and the other operators have done a marvelous job of working around the golf course and the golfers with a minimum of disturbance. It really helps when we know the job will be done expertly and won't conflict with play.
Thanks again for all you have done for us (and the industry!), and best wishes for another successful season.
"Since Harmon Turf Services started providing aeration services it has been better than sliced bread. They have equipment for any kind of aeration and always do a great job."
"I've been using Harmon Turf Services for years. They have done work for me at three clubs here in Virginia over the last ten years. They are one of those few contractors that do what they say they are going to do, when they say they are going to do it and for the price they said they were going to do it for. Here at Boonsboro they are doing our twenty greens, (deep-tine, shallow core, harvest, topdress, and Pro-Seed) turn-key, in less than two days. It means a lot to our members to have the course tied up for such a short time. Harmon's services are a part of our operating budget and will be for a long time."
"I have been a customer of Harmon Turf Services for more than 10 years. They are a great bunch of people and always do good work. For the past four years I have contracted Harmon Turf to drill backfill my clay greens. The results have been fantastic. Even after receiving 14 inches of rain in one week we were able to keep the greens open for play. I intend to keep Harmon Turf in my budget for the future."
"We have been using Harmon Turf Services for our deep tine aerification at the Golden Eagle golf course for over ten years. During this time we have never had one bad experience with their company. They work with you on scheduling, show up when they are supposed to, are courteous to golfers, and do a clean, neat job. Rob King is always friendly, does exactly what you want, and doesn't stop until the job is complete. I highly recommend Harmon Turf Services."
"I am a very satisfied customer of Harmon Turf
Services and always look forward to having Joe and his
staff work on our field. I've always been pleased with
service, workmanship and results and our City
Stadium-Casey Field is a solid reflection of their work as
we were recognized by the STMA as having the National High
School Football Field of the Year in 1997-1998. Casey
Field is a multi-use playing surface and when in play for
baseball has also been highly praised for its playing
surface. In 1999 we had overseed and roll both baseball
and football playing surfaces, then immediately upon
completion, had the local high school baseball team play
on the field.
"As you know I have used Harmon Turf Services for 13 or 14 years now to deep-tine my greens. These old push-up greens came ever so close to being rebuilt around 1990. I advised my grounds committee to try a few other things like hydrojecting, deep-tining, needle-tining, spiking, ets., before "going under the knife" so to speak. Rob King had been coning in each spring and fall to deep tine with either 1/2' or 3/4' tines. Two years ago, in the spring, Rob asked: "have you considered needle-tining these greens?". That July we did, and what a difference it made, it really invigorated these old greens and got them through the rest of the summer. We have needle-tined now for three years in a row, each July.
Harmon's services alone did not save these greens, but it was an integral key component. The greens drain so much better, we have little if any pocketed-wet areas, and all 20 greens are so much more consistent in every way. During stress times, the greens seem to "breathe" better due to better gas exchange for the roots.
I will highly recommend you to anyone who inquires."
"I would like to take the time to once again thank you for your services. With the temperatures in the mid twenties on the day we were scheduled to aerate, I was not sure if we were going to be able to go. Bob hung in with us till we were able to get started around 10:30. I really appreciate the fact that Harmon Turf Services was there until the job was finished. But to tell you the truth, I would not expect anything less from a Harmon, which has given me outstanding service for over 10 years.
We are lucky to be able to close the course for a day for aeration and it is comforting to know that I can depend on you to help us get the job done.
I am looking forward to working with you again in September."
"We have been working with Harmon Turf Services on contract fairway aerification services twice yearly for three years. HTS is a very professional group of people, with quality and service as their number one priority. Joe and his staff have gone to great lengths to ensure that we receive the best possible end product each and every time, on time.
We will continue to work with Harmon on everything from core aerification, to drilling and filling, and deep tine fairway aerification."
"We have used Harmon Turf Services at Ericsson Stadium for several years. Harmon's quality of work and level of service is unsurpassed in the industry. I look forward to working with them for years to come."
"I just wanted to write to thank you and your guys for a job well done last fall. The shallow core aeration and overseeding of our fairways went very smoothly and came out better than expected. The timely and efficient manner of which your crew worked was much appreciated. The drill and great care and worked cautiously on our delicate putting surfaces.
I am a firm believer that you must surround yourself with good people, and that you have. Your staff was extremely friendly and understanding of the care that turf professionals demand. I was extremely impressed by your crew that I recommended your company to my father, Len Berg, who operates a 27-hole private facility in Pittsburgh, PA. I am confidant that he will be as pleased with your services as I was.
I look forward to the next opportunity to work with you and your company, see you in 2003!"
